Google just announced that due to the increase in mobile usage across the internet, they will now start to use whether your website is mobile friendly as part of their ranking process. What does that mean? It means if your website isn't mobile-friendly, you'll lose your current Google ranking if your competition does have a mobile website.
If you're unsure of how your website would do on a mobile device, click here to use Google's Mobile-Friendly Test. If your website passes the test, your website shouldn't lose any ranking. If it doesn't pass the test, you may want to consider a new website that is mobile friendly, and especially, responsive.
At Friday Marketing, we believe in responsive web design. Responsive websites are built using a framework that responds to the size of the browser and device that it is being viewed on. The benefits of responsive web design include having only one website, a positive and consistent user experience, and when you need to update your website, the change only needs to take place once. Having a separate mobile website isn't favorable when it comes to search engines, you'll have to make updates in more than one place, and user experience will most likely be different. These days, with people using multiple devices to view the same websites, having a consistent user experience is key.
In their blog post, Google announced that this change will start to take place on April 21, 2015, and that it “will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.” Keyword here—significant. So, the sooner you take action, the better off your business will be—it's time to go mobile.
